Southern Alberta athletes in Zone 1 claim 36 medals at Winter Games

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Zone 1 had a strong showing in the 2020 Alberta Winter Games in Airdrie.

The event wrapped up on Family Day Monday with more than 1,700 competitors across the province taking part in a wide variety of sports and athletic competitions.

“The skill, resolve and love of sport displayed by these young athletes at the 2020 Alberta Winter Games was inspiring,” says Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism, and Status of Women Leela Sharon Aheer. “My sincere congratulations to all the competitors; may your future in sport continue to shine.”

Zone 1 includes Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Brooks, Nanton, and other communities in that region.

Among the 292 people from Zone 1 who competed, they will take home seven gold medals, nine silver medals, and 20 bronze.

The first-place winners in the region include:

  • Lauren Putzi (Claresholm) – Artistic Gymnastics: JO 7 – Floor
  • Loic Beaton (Lethbridge) – Judo: Male 40 kg to 45 kg
  • Blessing Diyaolu (Lethbridge) – Wrestling: Female 80 kg
  • Charlize Isabelle Medilo (Lethbridge) – Judo: Female 44 kg to 48 kg
  • Emmy Selk (Lethbridge) – Wrestling: Female 46 kg
  • Olivia Chenard (Medicine Hat) – Artistic Gymnastics: JO 7 – Beam
  • Kiana Ivey (Medicine Hat) – Wrestling: Female 56 kg
