U of L and Lethbridge College Weekend Sports Recap: Feb. 14-16, 2020

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Success for some, tough losses for others made up a weekend of action for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

The men’s basketball team continued to display dominance, winning both of its weekend matchups against Olds College to bring the club’s win streak to three.

On Friday evening, Feb. 14, Brock Dewsbery led the way with 23 points en route to the 128-67 victory. Saturday’s score was a touch closer, but the Kodiaks still came out on top 89-73.

The 18-1 Kodiaks end the regular season against Briercrest College this coming weekend before the start of the post-season.

The women’s team went .500 over the weekend. They barely beat Olds College Friday night. Final score was 64-63. Natalie Hoyt led the team in scoring with 18 points, along with nine rebounds.

On Saturday, the Kodiaks fell 63-54 against the Broncos. The women’s team ends the regular season against Briercrest this weekend. They’re in third place in the ACAC standings with a record of 10-9.

The men’s volleyball club, first place in the standings, lost 3-0 against SAIT on Friday (Feb. 14) before a 3-0 win at home on Saturday.

The women’s team sits in fifth place in the standings. They’ve won four games in a row and defeated SAIT 3-0 Friday before a 3-2 win against the Trojans on Saturday in Lethbridge.

Both volleyball teams wrap their regular seasons this weekend against Briercrest College.

U OF L PRONGHORNS

The men’s basketball team is off to the Canada West quarterfinals.

They defeated the University of Regina 98-86 on Friday (Feb. 14) evening. Three players dropped 20 points for the ‘Horns in their victory: Kyle Peterson, Chad Oviatt and Keanu Funa.

The team will move on to face the top seeded University of Alberta Golden Bears in Edmonton this Saturday, February 22 at 2:00 p.m.

The women’s team didn’t see as positive a result – putting up a strong fight but ultimately losing 93-85 in double overtime against the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves.

Madison Landry led the way for UNBC with 30 points. The ‘Horns were led by Kacie Bosch in her last game with the team. Bosch scored 21 points, with 12 rebounds and five assists.

Katie Keith, also playing in her final game with the U of L, scored six points and grabbed 14 rebounds to go along with eight assists. Asnate Fomina was the third player who laced up for her final game with the Pronghorns. She scored 18 points, with five rebounds and four assists.

The loss marked the end of the season for the women’s basketball club. UNBC moves on to the Canada West quarterfinals to face the number one seed University of Calgary Dinos.
