LETHBRIDGE, AB. — The Lethbridge Hurricanes were coming off two straight losses Wednesday (Feb 19) night, as they hosted the Spokane Chiefs, who needed a single point to clinch a playoff spot.

Fortunately, the Canes had already nailed down their playoff chances, they were defeated by the Chiefs 6-3.

Nine minutes into the first period, after some heavy pressure by the Chiefs, Bear Hughes buried the rebound off of shot from league leader in points, Adam Beckman.

Five minutes later, the Chiefs break out with a two-on-one rush and Jack Finley gets the nice feed across from Beckman and he pops in the one-time to make the 2-0 for the Chiefs.

The first period horn sounded after a forceful period by the Chiefs, with the Hurricanes getting out of the period alive and only trailing by two.

For the first five minutes of the second period, the Canes put pressure on Chiefs’ goalie Lukas Parik until the Chiefs halted that attack and added in a goal from Luke Toporowski, for his 21st goal of the season.

With just over eight minutes left in the period, the Canes head on the powerplay and Calen Addison drops it back for Alex Cotton, who rips it top shelf to cut the lead to 3-1 for the Chiefs.

At the very end of the period, with just under 10 seconds left, Hurricane forward Zack Stringer pulled off a nasty toe-drag top shelf backhand goa,l to beat Parik and put the score at 3-2 for the Chiefs.

The period ended with the Canes dominating the shots 33-19 over Spokane.

Heading into the final frame the Hurricanes had to come out firing…and they did not.

Adam Beckman silenced the crowd with a quick rebound goal, that gave him 42 goals on the season.

On a delayed penalty, the Chiefs came down the ice and fed the puck across for Toporowski, who beat Tetachuk for his second of the game and the Chiefs fifth goal.

Just seconds later Hurricane Brett Davis gets his 20th goal of the season, after a scramble in front of the net, which made it 5-3 for the Chiefs.

The Hurricanes pulled their goalie with less than three minutes on the clock and the Chiefs’ Beckman added an empty-net goal, making it a 6-3 win for Spokane.

In a parting comment, Left-winger Zack Stringer told LNN, “We need to have a better start in the periods and give a full 60 minutes.”

The Hurricanes’ next game is on Friday, Feb 21 at 7pm, when they host the Moose Jaw Warriors.
