LETHBRIDGE, AB – A new report from Stats Canada has found that, while Albertans do earn more than people in other provinces, they are making less than in years past.

In 2018, the median after-tax income for people in Alberta was $72,700 per year. That is down from $75,900 in 2014.

The median Canada-wide was $61,400 in 2018. Those in Nova Scotia brought home the least amount of money at $52,000.

Non-senior families in Canada made $2,300 more in 2018 than 2017, while the number for those 65-years or older stayed virtually the same.

The growth for non-senior families was driven by market gains, which include employment income, retirement income, and income from investments.

The poverty rate country-wide fell from 9.5% in 2017 to 8.7% in 2018. As of the most recent number, about 3.2-million Canadians lived under the poverty line.

The child poverty rate remained at 8.2%.

Top income earners accounted for 23% of total income in Canada in 2018, while the bottom 40% represented 20.8% of income. It was not clear what portion of the overall population was in the top decile.
