Farm groups want action on rail blockades

CALGARY –– The Canadian Federation of Agriculture is calling for “decisive action” from Ottawa on rail blockades.

The federation says the blockades are causing critical supply shortages for farmers and hurting their ability to get products to market.

Federation president Mary Robinson says this is despite the fact that farmers having nothing to do with the dispute over a B-C natural gas pipeline.

She cited shortages of propane for heating barns and feed for animals as among top concerns.

The organization represents around 200,000 farm families across the country.

Meanwhile, the president and C-E-O of the Canadian Canola Growers Association believes it will take months to clear the grain export backlog, following recent protests that have affected Canada’s railways.

Rick White says the protests, combined with last year’s strike at C-N and derailments, have all caused grain export delays and tarnished Canada’s reputation as a reliable grain supplier.

White says there are over 50 grain ships waiting to load grain at the West Coast, twice the normal amount.

He says there’s also more than 20-thousand rail car orders unfilled and some prairie grain elevators are getting plugged up.
