LETHBRIDGE, AB – A Lethbridge College Kodiaks volleyball duo has been named to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) all-conference team.

The annual conference awards banquet was held in Lethbridge Wednesday evening, to kick off the 2020 Murray Chevrolet Cadillac ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championships.

Fifth year outside hitter Carter Hansen was named to the all-conference team for the second straight year. Second year middle Quinn Buchanan picked up his first al-star nod.

Kodiaks coach Greg Gibos commented on Hansen’s accomplishments over the course of his Kodiaks career, in a release issued by Lethbridge College.

“All of his legacy accomplishments are one thing but the consistency that he puts in every year is astounding,” Gibos stated.

He said the club’s staff knew Buchanan was “going to be a dominant middle blocker”.

“If you go back and read all of our stuff from early in the year, he was our guy to watch because he had a great summer of getting his body into a good spot and I think he showed that all year,” he said about the second year player.

Hansen, who hails from Magrath, played all five seasons of his ACAC career with Lethbridge College.

This season, he became the ACAC’s all-time kills leader, finishing his regular season career with 1,370 kills. That’s 203 more than former Kodiaks all-star Dax Whitehead, who previously held the conference record. Hansen also finished second in kills per set in the conference for the 2019-2020 season, averaging 3.69. Additionally, he placed third in the conference in total attacks and points, sixth in service aces and 12th in hitting percentage.

Hansen said, “it’s the result of a lot of hard work put in.”

“It’s an honour and privilege to get this award. I couldn’t do [it] without my teammates – this has a lot to do with them and my coaches.”

Buchanan is a graduate of Catholic Central High School. In his rookie season, he only played in 11 matches. This season, he hit the court for 22 matches. He finished second on the team and 14th in the conference in blocks.

“It’s a super special honour, especially having this come in my hometown here in Lethbridge,” he said.

“It was really nice to get this kind of experience this season, because last year I didn’t get a whole lot of time out on the court. So it’s been a growing season and it’s worked out quite well.”

The Kodiaks face Lakeland College in quarter final action tonight, Feb. 27, at 8:00 p.m. in Lethbridge.
