Hurricanes down Oil Kings 5-4 in Friday night shoot-out

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It didn’t just take overtime, but a shoot-out for the Lethbridge Hurricanes to defeat the Edmonton Oil Kings Friday night.

Fans were treated to a feisty battle of the two central division teams.

FIRST PERIOD

The game’s opening goal came later in the first period, with Brett Davis scoring his 24th of the season at the 11:29 mark. Chase Wheatcroft and Alex Cotton assisted.

14:15 in, Edmonton’s Riley Sawchuk was issued a minor penalty for tripping. That would be the only penalty called in the first.

Right before the buzzer, at 19:44, Wyatt McLeod scored his second of the year, tying the game at 1-1 going into the second period of the game.

SECOND PERIOD

Lethbridge’s Joe Arntsen was called for slashing (minor) 3:05 in. The Oil Kings took advantage, with Ethan McIndoe scoring on the power play at 3:49.

Before fans would see the game’s next goal, some penalties were issued:

· Jalen Luypen (Edmonton) received a minor for roughing at 6:12

· Trevor Thurston (Lethbridge) received a minor for roughing at 6:12

· Ty Nash (Lethbridge) was called for interference, a minor at 8:51

· Logan Dowhaniuk was given a minor for holding at 11:31

The Hurricanes took advantage of that last call, with Dylan Cozens tying the game at 2-2 at the 12:09 mark.

Cozens’ power play goal was his 33rd of the season, with Davis and Calen Addison earning the assists.

Before the period was done, Edmonton’s Josh Williams was issued a minor penalty for hooking at 14:09.

THIRD PERIOD, OT & A SHOOT-OUT

Entering the matchup’s final frame, the game was all tied up at two.

20 seconds in, Jake Neighbours scored his 23rd of the season to give Edmonton the 3-2 lead. Neighbours was later given a minor penalty for roughing at 6:36.

A mere 20 seconds later, his teammate Matthew Robertson was issued a minor for boarding.

It wouldn’t be until the 13:04 mark that Lethbridge would respond to Neighbours’ earlier goal. Brett Davis scored his second of the game to tie the game at three.

Alex Cotton and Logan Barlage assisted on the goal.

In the game’s final minutes, Vladimir Alistrov scored at 17:07. This put Edmonton up 4-3.

The Hurricanes’ wouldn’t go down that easy, though, with Zack Stringer scoring his 11th of the season at the 19:07 mark.

Stringer’s last-second goal, assisted by Cotton and Addison, sent the game to overtime.

The extra period didn’t see a decisive winner, which meant the Friday night battle was going to a shoot-out!

Brett Davis kept his hot streak going, scoring on Beck Warm to give Lethbridge the advantage right out of the gate.

Up next was Dylan Guenther, whose shot attempt was stopped by Carl Tetachuk.

Alex Cotton then scored on warm to put the ‘Canes up 2-0 in the shoot-out.

Jake Nieghbours’ final effort for the Oil Kings didn’t land, with Tetachuk picking up another save, securing the 5-4 win for Lethbridge!

The Hurricanes still have about a month of regular season action before the playoffs begin and sit in second place of the central division with 79 points. The Oil Kings lead the division with 90 points.

Up next for Lethbridge is a matchup with the Brandon Wheat Kings Saturday, February 29. The ‘Canes will once again be on home ice at the ENMAX Centre before visiting the Scotiabank Saddledome to face Calgary on Sunday.

The Oil Kings are in Red Deer Saturday to face the Rebels.
