Canes end a three-game weekend with a 3-2 win in Calgary

LETHBRIDGE — After a win and a loss on home ice this weekend, the Hurricanes head to Calgary for a match-up with the Hitmen on Sunday afternoon.

The game opened with a trio of penalties a regular intervals – two against the Hitmen for holding and one against the Canes’ Alex Cotton for slashing.

The first, and only, goal of the game came at 12:48 off the stick of Chase Wheatcroft, assisted by Ty Prefontaine and Jett Jones.

The first 20-minutes ended with the Canes’ in front 1-0.

The middle frame saw the teams double-down on the penalties. Just 24-seconds into play, Koletrane Wilson skated off to the penalty box for holding. One minute later, Calgary’s Jett Woo was tapped with a double minor for checking from behind and both teams were left playing four on four hockey.

At 4:54, Koletrane Wilson took advantage of a power play, passing the puck to Dino Kambeitz, who fired it between Calgary’s pipes, giving the Canes a 2-0 lead.

By the middle of the frame, the teams resumed the game of penalties. Ty Nash took a double minor penalty for ‘slew-footing’, while Calgary’s Blake Allan was cited for roughing. The final action in the period was a hooking penalty against Calen Addison.

The period ended on the 2-0 score for the Canes.

The final 20-minutes of action began with Addison still in the penalty box and some scoring action. At 1:19, Calgary’s Orca Wiesblatt put his team on the scoreboard. At 5:24, the Hitmen had a second goal and tied the game, but ten seconds later, Dino Kambeitz answered back with a short-handed goal, for thee Canes to again take the led 3-2.

The game ended with the Canes’ 3-2 win, giving the team 81 points on the season and 37-16-2-5 in the standings. The Hurricanes’ next game is Wednesday (Mar 4) night in Prince George.
