Hwy 864 / 56 Ave connection & improvements to start this spring in Taber

TABER, AB – Taber Town Council has approved work to connect a residential neighbourhood with one of the community’s primary highways.

McNally Contractors has been selected for the Highway 864 Intersection and 56th Avenue Extension project.

Mayor Andrew Prokop says the current pathway between the two roads is not sufficient to meet the growing traffic int he area.

“I guess you can get a vehicle through there now, but it’s really not a designated trail or driving thoroughfare through there, but it’s designed to open that area up into that 56th Avenue location, open up that residential area and for some new residential building as well.”

Once completed, there will not only be a formal intersection between Highway 864 and 56 Ave, but the area’s walking path will be improved so residents can more easily access the Taber Offleash Dog Park and the Trout Pond.

Asphalt in the area will be replaced as well as the sewer lines.

This project is expected to cost just over $3.16-million. The town will use $690,000 in Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) grants, while the rest will come from their capital reserves.

Depending on the weather, Prokop hopes to have construction started in April or May.

The project should wrap up in the fall of 2020.
