Daylight saving a good time to check residential alarms

Mar 6, 2020 | 5:30 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The clocks will spring forward this weekend.

Daylight saving time begins this Sunday, March 8. At 2:00 a.m., clocks get turned forward one hour to 3:00 a.m. local time.

With the start of daylight saving time, firefighters in Lethbridge are reminding residents about certain safety measures they should take in addition to moving their clocks forward.

Officials say it’s a good time to check residential smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries.

On that note, a release from the City of Lethbridge states that cooking fires are very common calls for local firefighters.

“Often because people walk away from the kitchen and get distracted. A working smoke detector is critical in alerting people in the case of a cooking fire,” reads the release.

Firefighters responded to over 300 cooking/smoke detector calls in 2019.

Carbon monoxide has been called the “silent killer” because it is an odourless, colourless gas that can be poisonous and cause death, making it even more important to ensure detectors are in proper order.

Heating and cooking equipment that burns fuel, like stoves and furnaces are common sources of carbon monoxide. Detectors should be replaced every 10 years and residents are reminded to test their alarms monthly and make sure everyone in their home knows what they sound like.
