LETHBRIDGE, AB – “Post-game autograph sessions and promotions involving direct contact with players will be cancelled for the remainder of the season,” reads a statement from the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

The Western Hockey League (WHL) is taking steps to mitigate the spread of coronavirus.

Medical and training staff at all of their 22 clubs have been provided with information from regional health authorities regarding the transmission of COVID-19.

“The WHL is advising players and Club personnel to maintain good hygiene practices, including regular and thorough washing of hands with soap and water, or cleansing with alcohol-based hand sanitizers.”

The league is asking all teams to follow a number of recommendations, which include:

  • Eliminating handshakes between teammates, opponents, officials
  • No sharing of water bottles or towels on benches or penalty box areas
  • Avoid direct contact with fans, including high-fives, handshakes, and autographing of items

Players and personnel are asked to immediately contact their club’s medical staff if they are showing symptoms consistent with COVID-19.

An official with the Lethbridge Hurricanes told LNN that they will be following all of the WHL’s coronavirus protocols and recommendations.
