Outstanding library initiatives across southern Alberta recognized

CARDSTON, AB – The annual Rewards for Excellence and Distinction (READ) were awarded earlier this month in Lethbridge.

Nominees were chosen by the Chinook Arch Marketing and Communications Committee in the areas of service, collaboration, innovation, and community benefit.

The winners are as follows:

Jim and Mary Kearl Library of Cardston: SOCKTOBER Event

  • A sock drive where donated clothes would be sent to Blood Tribe FCSS, Lavern FCSS, Streets Alive, and Lethbridge United Way. Donation drives were held at the Cardston Library and they provided many of the supplies for it

Claresholm Public Library: Teen Advisory Group (TAG)

  • A group of 11-16-year-olds meet once per month to create programs such as Teen Movie Nights, Teen Water Balloon Battle Royale, and Escape the Haunted Library. TAG members do much of their own fundraising and volunteer with other library initiatives

Vulcan Municipal Library: The Garden Project

  • A group of Prairieview Elementary School students joined local senior Elaine once a week to grow flowers and vegetables within the library

Carmangay & District Municipal Library: Special Community Programming for Children and Youth

  • Programming for youth with life-skills and experiences in the categories of physical literacy, nature and environment, self-care and independence, and the arts & culture. This includes rollerblading lessons, interactive presentations from the Birds of Prey Centre, cooking classes, and Live History workshops, and theatrical performances
