OTTAWA, ON – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced a significant measure to limit the spread of COVID-19.

“We will be denying entry to Canada to people who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents,” Trudeau announced Monday. “This measure will carve out some designated exceptions including for aircrews, diplomats, immediate family members of Canadian citizens, and at this time, U.S. citizens.”

The Prime Minister also gave directions to airports to ban all travellers showing symptoms of COVID-19 from entering planes.

Air operators will have to complete a basic health assessment on every traveler.

“I know that this is news that will concern many Canadians who are abroad. I can assure you that our government will continue to support you.”

As assistance program will be introduced for Canadians who are abroad and showing symptoms of the virus. This would help them to cover their cost for returning to the country and essential costs while waiting for their return trip.

Starting on Wednesday, March 18, only four Canadian airports will be able to accommodate international flights – Pearson in Toronto, Trudeau in Montreal, as well as Vancouver and Calgary.

Domestic flights and those from the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean will not be affected by this measure nor trade.

“These measures will help save lives,” says Trudeau.
