Provincial government declares State of Emergency and sets new restrictions to limit COVID-19
EDMONTON, AB. — At a news conference from the legislature early Tuesday (Mar 17) afternoon, Premier Jason Kenney announced that Alberta is declaring a state of Public Emergency and has set out new restrictions to curtail the COVID-19 pandemic.
The declaration will empower authorities, under the Public Health Act, to more effectively manage the pandemic response in the province. Alberta’s Provincial Operations Centre has been elevated from a level 3 to a level 4, the highest level.
Effective immediately and until further notice,Premier Kenney stated the Alberta government is cancelling events that have more than 50 people.
“This is an unprecedented moment in our history and decisive action is needed. We recognize that these measures will have a profound impact on the lives of Albertans, but they are necessary in the face of this growing pandemic.”
