Province announces repurposing at Lethbridge’s homeless shelter

Mar 20, 2020 | 3:47 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province’s Emergency Management Committee of Cabinet has announced that it will support expansions to Alberta’s network of homeless shelters.

During a press conference Friday, Premier Jason Kenney says the implementation of shelter pandemic plans are underway across the province as a means of keeping those at-risk from contracting or spreading COVID-19.

The Lethbridge Shelter and Resource Centre is repurposing its space to allow for “additional requirements” around social distancing.

According to the Premier, the City of Lethbridge has identified space to add surge capacity to meet the shelter’s changing needs.

Shelters in Edmonton, Calgary, Grande Prairie, and Red Deer are also expanding or repurposing their spaces.

“I want to thank the Mayors of Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge, and other communities for working so closely with us and Minister Sawhney for acting so quickly to ensure we do everything possible for the safety of Albertans who do not have a home.”

We hope to learn more about the changes to the Lethbridge Shelter and Resource Centre.
