City makes transit free to limit passenger-driver contact

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge says it is continuing to support what it believes is an “essential service.”

Due to the evolving COVID-19 situation locally, two new measures are being introduced to keep both passengers and drivers safe.

People are asked to enter and exit city busses from the back. As well, passengers will no longer be required to pay a fee as you would typically do so at the front of the bus.

“Both of these measures will limit interactions between drivers and the public and promote social distancing,” reads a media release from the City of Lethbridge.

Those with special mobility or accessibility needs will still be allowed to use the front entrance so they can utilize the ramp.

Passengers are asked to stay at least two metres from each other and from the driver. Transit use is said to be down lately, so this should not be a problem in most cases.

“We recognize the need to continue operating Lethbridge Transit as an essential City service,” says Jody Meli, City Manager. “Some of our residents rely on Transit to access necessary services and supplies. “What we want to emphasis to the community is that Transit is there if you absolutely need it and should be limited to essential travel only.”

Staff members within Lethbridge Transit recently upped their game when it comes to sanitation, wiping down all touched surfaces daily and continuing with regular disinfectant treatments.
