Applications open for provincial emergency isolation support

EDMONTON, AB – Applications are now going through MyAlberta for those seeking emergency isolation support.

The Government of Alberta recently announced $50 million in financial support for self-isolating residents with no other source of income. The temporary funds are one of the many measures the government is taking in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Working Albertan adults who have experience a total or significant loss of income because they have had to self-isolate or care for a dependent who is self-isolating can apply for emergency isolation support payments if:

· They have been diagnosed with COVID-19

· They are caring for a dependent who is self-isolating

· They have otherwise been directed by health authorities to self-isolate

· They are not receiving compensation from any other source

Those who are NOT eligible for the program are those who:

· Were not working immediately before they were advised to self-isolate

· Can work from home

· Are not experiencing a significant loss of income as a result of self-isolation

· Are currently collecting other forms of income support or employer benefits while self-isolation, such as workplace sick leave benefits or federal employment insurance (EI) benefits

· Are staying home to care for a dependent who is home for a reason other than self-isolation

· Reside outside of Alberta

The application is available through the Government of Alberta website. Other supports are available for those who are not eligible for this particular program.

Once eligibility has been confirmed, residents will be asked to create a verified MyAlberta Digital ID, which is required to complete the application.

As part of the verification process, information from the applicant’s provincial driver’s license or ID card is used to confirm their identity by matching said information on the card to the government’s motor vehicles database. Once the applicant’s identity is confirmed, their application can be completed.

Qualifying applicants will get a one-time payment of $1,146 via Interac e-Transfer.

The province said this is a temporary program to help bridge the gap until the Federal Emergency Care Benefit is available in April.
