GRANDE PRAIRIE, AB – Alberta Health Services (AHS) is asking the public to not donate any food to their staff, volunteers or hospital patients as they try to contain the spread of COVID-19.

In a statement published to Facebook on Wednesday, AHS says, “During this global pandemic, coming together to help and support one another is of upmost importance. We greatly appreciate the hundreds of offers from Albertans to lend a hand to our healthcare staff and the patients in our care, including the donation or supply of food. Although we greatly appreciate this act of kindness, we must protect the health and wellbeing of our staff, volunteers and patients. Therefore, no AHS staff member may accept or serve any external, non-AHS sourced food, to patients or staff.”

AHS says this announcement is to ensure the food served meets AHS standard and will help patients heal.

They go on to add that AHS Nutrition and Food Services (NFS), Patient Food Services and Retail Food Services operations must not handle or serve food from unapproved sources.

AHS adds that while they appreciate the generosity from the public, they say the risk is too great right now and that these guidelines will help ensure to limit the spread of COVID-19 and protect the health and well-being of their hospitals and patients.

As of Wednesday, Alberta has 419 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
