Taber Curling Club getting full roof replacement

TABER, AB – “There’s no longer any Band-Aid fixes available to deal with what’s involved.”

The Mayor of Taber is commenting on Town Council’s decision on March 23 to do a full replacement of the roof at the Taber Curling Club.

The facility has had its share of small repairs over the last 30+ years since the roof was installed, but Andrew Prokop says the time has come to do more.

The town reports that the roof is in “poor condition” and has a remaining life expectancy of zero-to-one years.

“There’s actually areas where water is trapped in between the materials and/or seeping into the inside of the building, so it’s beyond the stage [where] that needs to be repaired.”

This work was originally expected to cost around $405,000. It was removed from the 2020 Capital Budget and will now be done for just $215,000.

Prokop says he does not know exactly how the cost decreased that much but believes it came down to some technical differences and a re-evaluation of what needed to be done.

The Curling Club closed earlier this month due to COVID-19 concerns.

Construction on the roof is expected to start sometime this summer. The facility will remain closed until work is completed.
