Western Canadian Baseball League provides COVID-19 update

Apr 6, 2020 | 9:06 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Bulls’ season could be in jeopardy.

The Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) – in which the Bulls are a part of – have yet to make a final decision regarding the status of the 2020 WCBL season amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Multiple sports leagues across the world have either suspended play indefinitely or cancelled competition. The WCBL did say, though, that their Board of Governors has established a timeline that will guide the decision for the upcoming season.

For the full 2020 campaign to take place, the Board set a date of May 2, 2020 for a final go ahead to occur. There are also provisions set for shortened seasons that would start either on or around Father’s Day or on or around Canada Day.

The WCBL stated that similar dates exist three or four weeks prior for these shortened seasons for logistics to be put in place.

The Board of Governors has agreed that if by early June, health and travel restrictions are still in effect as they are presently and the WCBL cannot confirm a start date, the season would be cancelled.

A release from the WCBL noted that the league is aware of logistical differences between communities that host teams. The release stated that the logistics might result in a franchise or two having to accept an emergency leave of absence due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

“If a later start date is needed a shortened schedule will be finalized and released,” read the release.

The WCBL said all decisions made will be done in the best interest of players, coaches, staff, officials and the fans.

“While we are eager to bring baseball back to each community, we know we must do this only with government and health authority consent,” read the statement from the league.

“We know baseball will return to the playing fields in the coming months and look forward to the games resuming. In the meantime, we once again thank you for your past, current, and future support for the WCBL and wish everyone the best during this unique and trying time.”

The WCBL is expected to release a further update near the end of the month, around April 20, 2020.
