City of Lethbridge temporarily cancels late fees for utility payments

Apr 7, 2020 | 10:39 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – If you are concerned about your ability to pay your city utility bills on time, don’t worry, you won’t be charged any penalties.

City Council passed a bylaw Monday to temporarily waive any fees as a consequence of late payment or failure to pay a utility account between now and June 19.

“We know there are families and households who are being financially impacted by this pandemic,” says City Councillor Belinda Crowson. “The motivation behind this bylaw is to alleviate some of the financial stress to those residents.”

Mayor Chris Spearman adds that those who are able to pay their bills should continue to do so.

“We want to make it clear that this is not a cancellation of utilities that are owed, but this will be an opportunity to defer payments while people are suffering cash flow issues.”

For now, the waiving of late fees is only temporary. If the COVID-19 situation has not improved by June 19 and people are still struggling to make ends meet, council will be able to vote on potentially extending this.

Residents are asked to call 311 to make arrangements for their accounts and investigate what payment options are available to them as soon as possible.
