Northern Alberta mayor very concerned over resignation of emergency room doctors

LAC LA BICHE, AB. – A mayor in northern Alberta says he has major concerns about 10 local doctors deciding not to cover emergency and obstetrics services at the community’s hospital.

The physicians from the Associated Medical Clinic in Lac La Biche said in a letter Thursday that they are resigning their hospital privileges effective July 31.

Mayor Omer Moghrabi of Lac La Biche County says the hospital serves a large area northeast of Edmonton that includes urban and rural communities, as well as First Nations and Metis settlements.

He says the government needs to get back to the bargaining table with the Alberta Medical Association before doctors start leaving the province.

Moghrabi says he doesn’t know of any other jurisdiction that’s fighting with its doctors in the middle of a pandemic.

A spokesman for Alberta Health Minister Tyler Shandro has said the government will replace the doctors who withdraw their services.
