Kodiaks celebrate 2020 KODI Award winners

Apr 23, 2020 | 8:49 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge College Kodiaks have announced the winners of the annual KODI Awards on Wednesday evening.

The special recognitions capped off a successful season for the Kodiaks that included one national championship, three ACAC championships and more than 60 ACAC and CCAA honours.

“Across the board, our teams and student-athletes achieved extraordinary results this year,” said Todd Caughlin, manager of Kodiaks Athletics, in a release.

“We thought it was important that they still got recognized with some sort of awards ceremony, and we want them all to know how proud we are of them.”

Major award winners were announced by Lethbridge College staff and coaches during a ceremony released on the Kodiaks social media channels.

Sponsored by Kodiaks boosters Val and Flora Matteotti, the Team of the Year award went to the national champion women’s cross country team. The squad won every grand prix it entered this season, including the ACAC and CCAA championships. The national win was the program’s first since 1996. The team also earned the Kodiaks GPA Award for the fall semester.

Christine Moser (soccer) and basketball star Brock Dewsbery earned the Tim Tollestrup Leadership Student-Athlete of the Year awards. Moser just capped off her third season with LC and was named the ACAC women’s soccer south division player of the year, as well as being named an all-Canadian. She also competed for the Kodiaks indoor track and futsal teams.

Dewsbery earned the men’s honour in his rookie season. From Raymond, he led the Kodiaks and finished fourth in the ACAC in scoring. He was named both the ACAC player and rookie of the year. He was also named an all-Canadian.

Sean Carey earned the Electrical Solutions Inc. Kodiaks Coach of the Year Award. This is the second straight year the soccer coach has won the award. This past campaign, he was named the ACAC soccer coach of the year in both the men and women’s conferences. He also earned the CCAA men’s soccer coach of the year award, as he helped lead the men’s soccer team to its first-ever ACAC championship.

Soccer player Brooklin Bellavance and basketball player Jackson Kasko were named the inaugural winners of the Calgary Flames Foundation Leadership Scholarships, which recognizes student-athletes who excel in leadership, community involvement and academics.
