96 new COVID-19 cases confirmed in Alberta, one new death

LETHBRIDGE, AB – As Alberta gets set to start its relaunch, 96 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the province.

The latest figures reported by the province today (Sunday, May 3) show that the total number of cases in Alberta is now at 5,766.

2,713 patients have recovered from the novel coronavirus.

The provincial government confirmed one new death related to COVID-19, as a man in his 90s at a continuing care centre in Calgary passed away in the past 24 hours.

The following is a breakdown of cases per Alberta Health Zone:

· Calgary Zone – 3,842 cases, 62 deaths (one new)

o 68,021 tests

· South Zone – 1,075, five deaths

o 12,540

· Edmonton Zone – 504 cases, 12 deaths

o 44,171

· North Zone – 221 cases, 15 deaths

o 11,768

· Central Zone – 88 cases, one death

o 12,602

The province has also listed 36 cases in zones yet to be determined.

Of these total cases, there are currently 90 people in hospital, with 19 of those individuals admitted to intensive care units (ICU).

743 cases of the total in Alberta are suspected of being due to community transmission. The one new death announced today brings the province’s total to 95.

To date, 615 cases have been confirmed at continuing care facilities, with 67 residents of these types of facilities succumbing to the virus.

Across Alberta, 161,245 COVID-19 tests have been completed. In the last 24 hours, 3,728 tests have been completed, according to the provincial government.

The breakdown for the South Health Zone by each community is as follows:

· Brooks – 989 cases (19 new), 178 recovered, four deaths

· Medicine Hat – 32 cases (one new), 20 recovered

· Lethbridge – 17 cases, 11 recovered

o South Lethbridge – eight cases, five recovered

o West Lethbridge – seven cases, six recovered

o North Lethbridge – two cases

· County of Newell – 11 cases, one recovered

· Cypress County – eight cases, seven recovered

· Cardston County – five cases

· M.D. of Taber – two cases, two recovered

· County of Forty Mile – two cases, two recovered

· Special Area No. 2 (which is just above the County of Newell and Cypress County on AHS’ Health Zones map) two cases, one death

· Lethbridge County – two cases (one new), one recovered

· Fort Macleod – one case
