LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge is reducing more of its workforce in light of COVID-19.

The city stated that there will be a temporary reduction of an additional 30 employees in May.

This brings the total number of temporary workforce reductions to 301 for the City of Lethbridge amid the health crisis.

According to the city, these latest reductions are primarily related to the delivery of cultural and recreational services as many local facilities remain closed amid the pandemic.

“The provincial government recently announced a re-launch strategy and plan, but opening dates for facilities such as arenas, pools and the ENMAX Centre remain uncertain at this time,” read a release issued by the City of Lethbridge.

“Once the City of Lethbridge is given approval to reopen additional facilities, time for reprogramming and preparing these facilities to meet public health orders will be necessary before a full workforce is required again.”

City Manager Jody Meli said, “I can’t thank all those involved enough for their professionalism and understanding.”

“As soon as we are able to open our facilities and get our services back on track, we intend on bringing our employees back to work.”

As the provincial guidelines change, the city says it will adapt as necessary. For more details on the City of Lethbridge’s response to COVID-19, go to lethbridge.ca/covid19.
