City workers “refreshing” downtown Lethbridge with renovations

LETHBRIDGE, AB – If you head through downtown Lethbridge in the coming weeks and months, you can expect to see workers present.

Starting Wednesday, May 6, crews will be removing the brick planters on the corner of 4 Ave South and 6 Street South (shown in the photo above). They will be replaced with new ones.

Tree removal will also be happening at 5 Ave South and 6 Street South.

The City of Lethbridge says this work should be taking place over the next week in several downtown locations.

“No road closures will be required for this work but parking stalls will be blocked off and fencing will be up in these area[s] to ensure the safety of both worker[s] and the public.”

The new planters should be installed in June with new trees being added at a later date.

This is all part of the Public Realm Enhancements (PRE) project under the city’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP), which also includes the installation of seasonal patio spaces and the replacement of street furniture, planters, banners, trees, and grates.

“The objective of this project is to create vibrant, beautiful, and accessible public spaces in the downtown while also improving overall functionality.”

The total budget for the PRE is $1,050,000.

Initiatives in the PRE started in 2018 and should be fully completed by the summer or fall of 2021.
