Many East Kootenay provincial parks re-opening May 14, but B.C. discouraging non-essential travel

CRANBROOK, B.C. – The majority of provincial parks in southeastern B.C. are set to re-open Thursday, May 14 for day use, just before the Victoria Day long weekend.

Recreation Sites and Trails BC will also start reopening the majority of recreation sites and trails to day-use activities only.

Restrictions around camping in the region are not expected to be lifted until June or July due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

B.C. Premier John Horgan made the announcement earlier this week, saying some BC parks will be open in time for the traditional start of the camping season.

LNN reported in early April that the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) was calling for the B.C.-Alberta border to be closed to non-essential traffic. While this step has not been taken, the RDEK told us that the Province of B.C. is asking recreational travellers, from B.C. or elsewhere, to stay away for the time being due to COVID-19 restrictions.

A list of BC parks re-opening on May 14th can be found at the link below.
