LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta has released its latest update for COVID-19 for Saturday, May 9.

Provincially, another 59 cases were confirmed, bringing the total to 6,157. There has not been a single day this week with over 100 new infections.

Of the 6,157 cases to date, 4,204 have seen full recovering, meaning less than one-third are still active.

At the JBS meatpacking plant in Brooks, 510 people who had tested positive have recovered. 89 cases among employees are still active.

879 at Cargill in High River have gotten better with 73 cases still being active.

The government says anyone with summer homes, cabins, and cottages in Alberta are now permitted to visit them. Property owners are still encouraged to consider local guidelines.

Those with summer homes outside the province are asked to not cross the border at this time unless it is for essential purposes.

As the weather heats up, Albertans will be looking to head to beaches and lakes. Recreators are told to “do so at their own risk and take precautions if they choose to enter the water, including checking for signs of blue-green algae and following any posted advice.”

Water testing at Alberta beaches is being delayed this summer as staff and lab capacity are focused on the COVID-19 response.
