COVID claims sixth life in Brooks

BROOKS, AB – The Government of Alberta has released its latest update on COVID-19 infections as of Sunday, May 10.

Another 96 infections were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 6,253. Of those, only 1,747 remain active

The province announced an additional death in Brooks, meaning the virus has claimed the lives of six people in the community. Although the daily report indicates that there are now seven deaths in the South Health Zone, the map that displays numbers by community only shows six for the region.

Provincially, COVID-19 has resulted in 117 deaths.

At the JBS meatpacking plant in Brooks, 520 employees who had tested positive have recovered while 82 cases remain active.

Of the 893 positive tests at Cargill in High River, 58 are active.

The breakdown by regional health zone is as follows:

  • Calgary zone – 4,244 cases, 1,159 active
    • 82 deaths
    • 52 in hospital, nine in ICU
    • 78,584 tests
  • South zone – 1,154 cases, 470 active
    • Seven deaths (one new)
    • Four in hospital, two in ICU
    • 14,041 tests
  • Edmonton zone – 509 cases, 65 active
    • 12 deaths
    • Nine in hospital, two in ICU
    • 49,488 tests
  • North zone – 227 cases, 31 active
    • 15 deaths (one new)
    • Six in hospital
    • 13,383 tests
  • Central zone – 99 cases, 17 active
    • One death
    • 14,316 tests

The breakdown for the South Health Zone by community is as follows:

  • Brooks – 1,053 cases (seven new), 614 recovered, six deaths (one new)
  • Medicine Hat – 33 cases, 26 recovered
  • Lethbridge – 18 cases, 12 recovered
    • South Lethbridge – Nine cases, five recovered
    • West Lethbridge – Seven cases, seven recovered
    • North Lethbridge – Two cases
  • County of Newell – 13 cases (one new), five recovered
  • Cypress County – 10 cases, seven recovered
  • Cardston County – Eight cases (one new)
  • Fort Macleod – Two cases
  • M.D. of Taber – Two cases, two recovered
  • County of Forty Mile – Two cases, two recovered
  • Lethbridge County – One case, one recovered
