Lethbridge County asking residents to watch what they flush

LETHBRIDGE COUNTY, AB – Lethbridge County’s sending out a reminder on items that cannot be flushed down the sink.

The county is asking residents to refrain from putting non-biodegradable items into their sinks, toilets and stormwater drains.

Officials at the county say there has been a recent uptick in gloves and other items being flushed, which in turn has caused blockages in the local system.

Below is a list of items that should not be flushed or washed down the drain:

· Wipes (even if they say ‘flushable’)

· Towels

· Rubber gloves

· Hygiene products

· Any other items that are not biodegradable

The county explained that the items listed above, especially rubber and latex gloves, do not easily or immediately break down and cause pipes to clog and fail.

“This is harmful to the sewer system and increases maintenance costs as staff must spend time unclogging the system so it can function normally,” read a release from Lethbridge County.

The county is thanking citizens for their cooperation.
