BROOKS, AB – There’s some much-needed good news out of Brooks this morning.

A group of 18 people in the community will split $1 million after buying a winning Lotto Max Maxmillions ticket.

“They thought I was joking when I called them,” Redemptor Progreso told the Western Canada Lottery Corporation.

Progreso bought the ticket on behalf of himself, Eden Babida, Jerrymar Badua, Wendell Belandres, Lourence Davis, Francis Domingo, Winston Go, Edgar Marzan, Joeven Nazarrea, Darwin Obosa, Joseph Pagdilao, Jeffrey Perlas, Rollie Rayray, Carlos Tabontabon, Alexis Tadeo, Edbert Ton, Arnel Viernes, and Rexie Rapisura.

The winning ticket was purchased at the Red Basket Food Store in Brooks. The community has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic with more than 1,000 cases confirmed in the city of 14,000.

After first learning of the win at a store’s ticket checker, Progreso couldn’t believe it. He went home for a bit, then went back to the store to check again and then many times after on ticket checkers and on the WCLC mobile app.

Progreso said the group buys two Quick Pick tickets for the Lotto Max draw each week.

“I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” he laughed. “I had my wife look on her phone and we checked it lots of times before I told everyone else.”

Progresso says he’ll be using his share to pay off some bills, help out his family, and take care of some projects around the house.
