Another ‘smoking material’ grass fire in the River valley

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Fire crews were called out around 4:00-pm on Thursday May 14, to deal with the second river valley grass fire in less than a month. This one was near the weir, where flames spread to about 1500 square feet and were damaging large trees.

Fire crews had the blaze was under control within 30 minutes and an investigation that was completed this Friday afternoon determined the cause was due to improper disposal of smoking materials.

On April 21, Fire crews were called to a much larger fire in the river valley, in the Elizabeth Hall Wetlands. That one was also caused by improper disposal of smoking materials.

Residents are reminded that if you use the river bottom walking and biking trails, please dispose of smoking materials in a non-combustible container and avoid throwing smoking materials outside of your vehicle.
