Only 112 COVID-19 cases still active in South Health Zone

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta has released its latest COVID-19 update as of Sunday, May 17.

Provincially, another 57 infections were confirmed, bringing the total to 6,664. Of those, 1,064 cases are still active and 5,453 patients have recovered.

57 people remain hospitalized, while nine have been admitted to intensive care units (ICU).

A total of 213,078 tests for the virus have been administered. There are 634 cases where it is unknown where the person’s exposure to COVID-19 came from.

The breakdown by regional health zone is as follows:

  • Calgary zone – 4,568 cases, 856 active
    • 91 deaths (one new)
    • 43 in hospital, six in ICU
    • 89,758 tests
  • South zone – 1,206 cases, 112 active
    • Eight deaths
    • Four in hospital
    • 16,490 tests
  • Edmonton zone – 518 cases, 60 active
    • 12 deaths
    • Eight in hospital, three in ICU
    • 55,432 tests
  • North zone – 229 cases, 18 active
    • 15 deaths
    • Two in hospital
    • 15,021 tests
  • Central zone – 99 cases, 13 active
    • One death
    • 16,106 tests

The breakdown for the South Health Zone by community is as follows:

  • Brooks – 1,089 cases (four new), 80 active, seven deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 35 cases, five active
  • Lethbridge – 21 cases, four active
    • South Lethbridge – 10 cases, two active
    • West Lethbridge – Eight cases, one active
    • North Lethbridge – Three cases, one active
  • Cardston County – 19 cases (four new), 14 active
  • County of Newell – 14 cases, three active
  • Cypress County – 10 cases, three active
  • Fort Macleod – Five cases (one new), three active
  • Special Areas No. 2 – Two cases, zero active, one death
  • M.D. of Taber – Two cases, zero active
  • County of Forty Mile – Two cases, zero active
  • Lethbridge County – One case, zero active
