U of L to have “hybrid model” this fall with high focus on online programming

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The University of Lethbridge has announced the direction they plan to take for the upcoming term.

President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mike Mahon says they are looking at a “robust, quality educational experience for the Fall 2020 Semester through the utilization of a hybrid delivery model.”

This was the finding of the U of L’s task force that examined potential courses of action amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

“In coming to this conclusion, the safety of our students, faculty, and staff has been and will continue to be our top priority. We must ensure we are maintaining a safe environment consistent with Alberta’s public safety guidelines and in line with public health directives. The welfare of our students, faculty, and staff as they learn, teach, and work is of the utmost importance.”

Dr. Mahon believes it is imperative to make a decision this early so they can direct their efforts on creating the best student experience possible.

While the primary focus will be on online programming, not all activities can be done in this way.

There will be some in-person learning activities including select labs, studio sessions, practicum experiences, and clinical placements. Some of this will happen on campus while others will be done through off-site placements.

According to Dr. Mahon, the University will offer select small group gatherings, will open the library for restricted services, and residence spaces and food services will be utilized.

“We wanted to stem our students’ anxiety as much as possible by removing any questions as to what the fall would look like. We will end the semester as it begins, subject to public health requirements, allowing our students, faculty and staff some certainty in the coming months. All the while, we will work to weave in enhancements to the student experience as we are able.”

The University is thanking students and staff members for their patience during these unknown times.
