Terry Fox Run goes virtual for 2020

May 21, 2020 | 4:43 PM

The spirit of Terry Fox is alive and well across Canada and around the world, and that’s why the annual run won’t be stopped by COVID-19.

The Terry Fox Foundation has announced the first-ever virtual Terry Fox Run in 650 communities across Canada on Sept. 20.

The tag line for the annual event is “Terry Fox Run 2020. One Day. Your Way.”

It’s been 40 years since Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope captivated the country. Fox began a cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer on April 12, 1980 in St. John’s, Nfld. He was forced to stop on Sept. 1 near Thunder Bay, Ont. after his cancer spread to his lungs.

The foundation’s interim executive director, Ara Sahakian, said they are committed to honouring Terry’s memory and his perseverance.

“Terry once said, ‘Anything is possible if you try’ Sahakian noted. “In 2020, a year where we are all learning to live life differently, there is only one way forward for The Terry Fox Foundation: Terry’s way. We have to try.”

The foundation encourages people to unite in spirit, not in person and walk, ride or run wherever they want — around the neighbourhood, backyard, down the street or around the block.

People can register for the run now at terryfox.org/run

To help commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope, Adidas Canada released a nine-piece collection of Terry Fox merchandise, including the original Orion running shoes. The items sold out within an hour of going on sale and Adidas quickly announced more would be made available soon.

The proceeds of the collection will go to The Terry Fox Foundation.
