18 new COVID-19 infections across Alberta, no new cases for Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province reported a very low number of new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, May 23.

18 new infections were announced, bringing the provincial total to 6,818 cases across Alberta.

The province noted that there are currently 814 active cases, while listing the number of recovered infections at 5,869.

Hospitalization rates remain low, with 48 people in hospital, six of whom are in intensive care.

One new death was announced, bringing the province’s COVID-19 death toll to 135. Saturday’s new death was listed in the Calgary Health Zone.

232,774 tests have been completed, with 3,981 tests done in the last 24 hours.

The province also noted that there are 74 active case and 630 recovered cases at continuing care facilities in Alberta – with 101 residents of such facilities succumbing to the virus.

The following is a break-down of cases per health region:

· Calgary Zone – 4,710 cases, 641 active cases

o 98 deaths (one new)

o 40 in hospital, five in ICU (intensive care unit)

· South Zone – 1,228 cases, 93 active cases

o Eight deaths

o One in hospital

· Edmonton Zone – 523 cases, 55 active cases

o 13 deaths

o Five in hospital, one in ICU

· North Zone – 234 cases, 19 active cases

o 15 deaths

o Two in hospital

· Central Zone – 99 cases, three active cases

o One death

o Zero in hospital

The breakdown for the South Health Zone is as follows:

· Brooks – 1,095 cases (three new), 53 active, seven deaths

· Medicine Hat – 38 cases, six active

· Lethbridge – 27 cases, 10 active

o West Lethbridge – 12 cases, five active

o South Lethbridge – 12 cases, four active

o North Lethbridge – Three cases, one active

· Cardston County – 23 cases, 15 active

· County of Newell – 15 cases, two active

· Cypress County – 12 cases (two new), four active

· Fort Macleod – Five cases, two active

· *Special Area No. 2 – Two cases, zero active, one death

· M.D. of Taber – Two cases, zero active

· County of Forty Mile – Two cases, zero active

· Lethbridge County – One case, zero active

*Special Area No. 2 is located just above the County of Newell and Cypress County on Alberta Health Service’s regional map.

CALGARY & BROOKS

On Friday, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney announced that the cities of Calgary and Brooks, the hardest hit communities within the province, will reopen more businesses are part of the government’s Stage One relaunch strategy this Monday.

INCREASED HEALTH SERVICES AND TESTING AVAILABLE SOON

The provincial government has also noted that starting on May 25, some Albertans will have access to more health services, including voluntary testing for asymptomatic staff and residents in long-term care and some designated supportive living facilities. Non-urgent surgeries that require hospital stays will resume.

Additionally, maternity services will resume at South Calgary Campus and High River Hospital on June 3.
