Drive-in high school graduation ceremony being organized in Lethbridge

May 25, 2020 | 11:26 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – While the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the cancellations or postponements of many graduation ceremonies, an alternative is being offered for students.

MyVictory Church and MyCityCare have teamed up to offer a drive-in graduation event for high school students in Lethbridge and the surrounding communities.

“It’s not meant to replace graduation for anyone, but it’s definitely a time for us to get together as a community and celebrate what these students have accomplished,” says MyVictory Church Director Jennifer Tribble.

Guests will stay in the vehicles for the duration of the ceremony while students walk across the stage.

A large LED screen will show the students as they walk up and have information about them.

“We’re going to read a quote and have their photos and their school and their baby photos, and then they’ll go off the stage and kind of go through a line up of cars, honking and cheering, and then proceed to go back to their vehicles.”

Family members in attendance will be able to listen to the proceedings via a site-specific FM transmitter. For those who cannot be there in person, there will be a live stream.

A professional photographer will be on hand with photos being provided digitally afterward.

Tribble says health and safety was a key priority in organizing the event.

She told LNN that they are following all protocols from Alberta Health Services.

“We have systems in place to make sure everyone’s social distancing, and then, as they’re coming up on stage that they’re keeping the [two] meters apart.”

Vehicles will be properly spaced out across the parking lot while only 50 graduates and volunteers will be allowed outside at one time.

Tribble adds that, since they started organizing this, COVID-19 protocols from the province have changed multiple times, so attendees should be prepared for further unanticipated changes.

Tickets are $32.84 each, but one secondary ticket can be bought at a reduced price.

“Basically, any of the costs for running the event – we’re not making any money off of it. Basically, just all the production stuff.”

Complimentary popcorn from the Movie Mill will be given out, while an optional dinner box can be purchased from LA Chefs.

The ceremony takes place at MyVictory Chuch just off of Highway 3 east of Lethbridge over three days from June 18-20.
