LPS clamps down on excessive speeding in the city

LETHBRIDGE, AB. — Excessive speeding violations, primarily along Mayor Magrath Drive over the weekend, continues to be an issues in the city.

On Friday (May 22), LPS apprehended two drivers racing along Mayor Magrath Drive who hit 107 km/h. Both drivers were charged and had their vehicles towed.

The following two nights, officers issued 21 violations tickets, following numerous reports from the public about noisy vehicles, racing and stunting – again mostly along Mayor Magrath Drive.

Some of the most egregious offenders included vehicles recorded at 120 km/h and 103 km/h along Mayor Magrath Drive’s 60 km/h zones, 128 km/h along Whoop Up Drive in a 90 km/h zone and 95 km/h in a 50 km/h zone along 43 Street North.

A number of additional tickets were issued to drivers travelling in excess of 20 km/h over the posted limit along Mayor Magrath Drive and other areas of the city. Other tickets included careless driving for drifting in a parking lot along the 800 block of 6 Avenue North, as well as one charge for impaired driving.

Police have received numerous complaints reporting speeding, stunting and racing along multiple streets in the city and officers will continue to target these areas as capacity allows.

Drivers are reminded, and required, to obey the posted speed limits at all times.
