Brooks resident dies from COVID-19, but no new infections in South Zone

BROOKS, AB – The Government of Alberta has released its daily update on COVID-19 for Thursday, May 28.

There were just 29 new cases, bringing the provincial total to 6,955. Of those, 652 cases are still active while 6,160 have recovered.

Another two people in the province died as a result of the virus – a person from Brooks and someone from the Calgary Health Zone, meaning it has now claimed the lives of 143.

In the South Health Zone, nine people have succumbed to COVID-19, but there were no new infections anywhere in the region.

A total of 245,949 COVID-19 tests have been completed in Alberta to date.

The breakdown by regional health zone is as follows:

  • Calgary zone – 4,830 cases, 518 active
    • 104 deaths (one new)
    • 40 in hospital, three in ICU
    • 106,384 tests
  • South zone – 1,235 cases, 55 active
    • Nine deaths
    • Two in hospital
    • 18,262 tests
  • Edmonton zone – 528 cases, 53 active
    • 13 deaths
    • Six in hospital, one in ICU
    • 62,666 tests
  • North zone – 239 cases, 22 active
    • 16 deaths
    • Two in hospital
    • 17,299 tests
  • Central zone – 99 cases, two active
    • One death
    • 18,159 tests

The breakdown for the South Health Zone by community is as follows:

  • Brooks – 1,096 cases, 24 active, eight deaths (one new)
  • Medicine Hat – 41 cases, eight active
  • Lethbridge – 27 cases, seven active
    • West Lethbridge – 12 cases, four active
    • South Lethbridge – 12 cases, three active
    • North Lethbridge – Three cases, zero active
  • Cardston County – 24 cases, eight active
  • County of Newell – 15 cases, one active
  • Cypress County – 14 cases, six active
  • Fort Macleod – Five cases, one active
  • Special Areas No. 2 – Two cases, zero active, one death
  • M.D. of Taber – Two cases, zero active
  • County of Forty Mile – Two cases, zero active
  • Lethbridge County – One case, zero active
