Floods force evacuations in Fairmont Hot Springs

CRANBROOK, B.C. – At least one community in southeastern B.C. has been evacuated due to flooding.

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) issued a state of local emergency Sunday evening for Fairmont Hot Springs, including neighbourhoods in Fairmont Creek and Cold Spring Creek.

“Our primary concern is the safety of residents,” says RDEK Communications Manager Loree Duczek. “The heavy rainfall has resulted in flooding and debris on both Fairmont Creek and Cold Spring Creek and we are asking everyone to stay away from the creek banks and avoid any roads that are compromised by flood water.”

The floods are said to be the result of heavy rainfall over the weekend, which resulted in localized flooding.

The evacuation order was later downgraded to an evacuation alert.

Local search and rescue crews were called in to aid in flood response efforts, including filling sandbags and helping impacted residents to get out of their homes.
