Council drawing out decision making

LETHBRIDGE, AB- Decision making appears to have become a labourious process for city council.

Councillors continue to toy with motions already presented, which are then placed on a future Council agenda for a decision, only to be moved forward – for further discussion.

One Councillor is even questioning why they can’t come to decisions.

The Pathways 24 Project has been in front of council for a few weeks now, but the project has been around for almost a year.

Groups gathered information, feedback from the public, including support from MLA Shannon Phillips and project plans, to pitch this $1.755 Million project to council. They have yet to make a decision.

At first, some councillors were supportive of the project right away and few were against it, now it’s been some time and the line seems to be split.

On top of the large amount of time put into the plan, a lot of public feedback on social media around Lethbridge is negative.

At Monday’s Council meeting, Blaine Hyggen put forward a new motion to rescind the original motion and drop the whole idea.

After questions were raised on whether to get rid of the entire project plan, Councillor Jeff Coffman amended Hyggen’s motion, now seeking to get ‘more’ public feedback.

With feedback from the public leading up to this decision being negative from the get-go, Hyggen supports his original motion and wants an answer soon.

However, council voted for Coffman’s amendment to gain more information no later than October 31st from community groups.

Council tabled the Hyggens’ original motion for rescindment and will come back to it in two weeks on June 15th.

The lack of a decision has frustrated Councillor Hyggen.

“I did not support this here a couple of months ago and I guess somewhat of the frustrating part is that we spent money from that point to the point we are now… I just hope the support comes through to cancel or rescind it with this two-third vote.”
