“It looks as though a semi-trailer turned on to the intersection [on to RR 21-1]. The rear trailer was across the railroad tracks [and] the train was unable to stop and caught the second [trailer] and tore it in half,” Lethbridge Fire Department Captain Chris Carney told LNN on scene.

Carney said there were no injuries to report.

“[There was] just a little bit of fuel leaking from the engine,” he said.

“That’s being cleaned up as we speak, and all the packages that were in the trailer are non-hazardous and just need a clean-up.”

The trailer was carrying animal feed.

The collision slowed eastbound and westbound traffic around RR 21-1, with crews closing off one westbound lane of Highway 3 at the intersection to RR 21-1.

RCMP responded to the scene along with the Lethbridge Fire Department.

RCMP told LNN that the CP Police Service will take on the investigation.
