Fort Steele to remain closed for summer

One of the East Kootenay’s most well-known attractions will remain closed for the summer as a safety measure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fort Steele Heritage Town has announced Wednesday on social media that the site will be closed to the public for the rest of the summer.

General manager Jessica Marusyk says keeping the site closed was a difficult decision to make.

“We were fortunate that our operating contract was modified a little bit to give us a little bit more wiggle room with how we were able to move forward with restrictions on social distancing and the max. capacity set,” says Marusyk. “We decided that we should probably proceed with our COVID plans and just really work on our site.”

During the closure, staff will focus on building upgrades and site enhancements, painting, curatorial attention and more.

“One of the biggest complaints that we ever have is the lack of upgrades to the site, pealing paint and what not,” Marusyk says. “We decided that while the site is shut down, we’re going to be working on what really matters. That’s the buildings and making sure they look their best.”

Marusyk says the Fort Steele Society is very sorry they will not be opening this summer, and they’re hopeful they can run their Spooktacular event closer to Halloween.
