City launches survey on lowering downtown speed limit to 30km/hr

Jun 9, 2020 | 7:22 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge is possibly looking to reduce the speed limit in the downtown area.

“Speed reductions would help in achieving the overall vision for downtown as a vibrant prosperous place that provides a safe and comfortable environment for pedestrians and cyclists,” reads a section from the survey page.

The area they are considering spans from 1 Ave South to 6 Ave South and Scenic Drive South to Stafford Drive.

Officials with the city say lowering the speed limit from 50 km/hr to 30 would help to “achieve a significant step towards increased transportation safety and the goal of eliminating major injury and fatal collisions on City roads.”

They claim it would also reduce the probability of a serious pedestrian injury or fatality by eight times.

The survey is open until June 30 and can be accessed online here.
