Lethbridge YMCA has no firm time table for reopening

Jun 10, 2020 | 5:15 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB– When it comes to opening the various sections of the YMCA, to answer the question of when is still unclear.

After being given the green light from the province to go ahead with Phase 2 of the Province’s Relaunch strategy for Friday, June 12, the YMCA can’t make any promises they’ll be opening right away.

From the information YMCA Director, Ross Jacobs gave to the media, there plan is to assess what kinds of facilities they’ll be able to open.

The YMCA has many different areas, from the Basketball Courts to the weight room, or other areas like the hockey rinks and daycare, are all being assessed before the reopening.

“We are not going to rush our reopening, and we will be extending our membership holds until December 31st, 2020.”

Jacobs acknowledged the needs of Lethbridge and the members of the YMCA, but he has to make sure everyone can be safe when the facility reopens.

“I would love to say it’s six days from now, or 12 days from now or 14, I know that we had originally preplanned whatever it looked like, we needed a month so realistically an early July time frame would not be unreasonable.”

Jacobs said his best bet of when they’ll be cleared to open would still be a while.

“It’s still not even 24 hours old.”

The news of reopening is new to everyone, just because the province is giving gyms and other amenities the go-ahead, doesn’t mean those places are ready to be opened.

Jacobs asks for patience and understanding when regarding the difficult decisions to reopen fitness centres.
