LPS launches new bike registration initiative

LETHBRIDGE, AB– After having his bike stolen four times over the span of a few years, 14-year-old Nathan Sherwood asked if the Lethbridge Police Service could help in any way.

With the help of the LPS, Sherwood was able to brainstorm some ideas to help find bikes once they’re stolen. The bike index is the idea that arose from the problem.

The initiative helps people register their bike with the LPS and once the bike goes missing it’ll be easier to find. Bike Index stickers are made of a strong, weather-resistant material and are extremely difficult to remove.

In 2019, LPS took 651 reports of stolen bikes but recovered a total of 915 bikes. Some of the stolen bikes had not been reported.

“It’s nice to know that some bikes are going to be recovered and given back to some people,” Sherwood said after revealing he was fed up with having his bike stolen on multiple occasions.

Registering your bike is easier than you think:

· Create an account at BikeIndex.org, including the bike’s serial number, make, model, and colour. You can also add a photo and more details like aftermarket parts and other distinguishing features.

· The phone number you provide is only accessible to city police officers.

· After you register, stickers are currently available for pick up at Alpenland, Ascent Cycle and Bert and Mac’s.

· Scan the sticker’s code with your smartphone camera or scanner app and link your bike by searching the description, email address, or serial number.

LPS officers will be handing out stickers on Saturday, June 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the police station.

Additional community sticker/registration days will be announced.

Lastly, police currently have about 200 recovered bikes in their compound, located on the west side of the police building. Anyone whose bike has been stolen is encouraged to attend the station and take a look. If you see your bike, call the front counter at 403-327-2210 during business hours.

Bikes are held for a minimum of 30 days then sent to auction.
