Lethbridge Brier bid is good to go

Jun 15, 2020 | 5:54 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB- Lethbridge City Council has approved the funding for the bid of hosting the Brier Curling Tournament in 2022.

With a vote of 7-2, the city will give $1 million to submit the bid to see if the city is the right suitor.

The bid needs to be submitted by the end of June if Lethbridge wants to test its luck on hosting the tournament.

Certain councillors were gung ho about the idea of possibly holding the tournament in the city, but some were opposed to allocating this amount of money right now.

Councillors Joe Mauro and Belinda Crowson were quite against the projected bid, and Crowson believes the bid isn’t needed at a tough time financially like right now.

However, councillors Mark Campbell and Ryan Parker made their presence felt suggesting the tournament could bring great things for the city and the city’s economy.

Not only having an estimated $6.5-$8 million in revenue being pumped into local businesses and other amenities, Campbell sees the national television coverage as a huge benefit.

On the optimistic side, the city sent out a release saying the tournament could haul in $10-$15 million.

The next step is to submit the bid before the end of the month.

If Lethbridge is chosen, the Brier would be held at Lethbridge’s Enmax Centre from March 4-13, 2022.
