More than half of Alberta small businesses open, but sales remain low: CFIB

More than half of Alberta’s small businesses are now fully open after closing during the COVID-19 pandemic, but sales remain low, according to a new survey by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB).

They say that 57 per cent of small businesses in the province are fully open, but that only 1-in-5 (21%) are seeing normal sales levels.

Alberta ranks fourth when it comes to which provinces are most open. New Brunswick leads the way at 67% followed by Saskatchewan (66%) and Quebec (61%). Ontario is shown as the least open province (43%) though the CFIB says the sample size for PEI was too small to measure.

CFIB says agriculture is leading the way across Canada with 78% of small businesses in the sector now fully open and 45% experiencing normal sales. Construction is next followed by professional services and manufacturing.

The hospitality sector continues to suffer most with just 18% of small businesses open at this time.

Alberta commenced with the second stage of its economic relaunch from the COVID-19 pandemic on Friday.
