COALDALE, AB – “They’re our neighbour as well as a business partner to the Town of Coaldale.”

Coaldale’s CAO Kalen Hastings spoke after officials with Lethbridge County have handed over the first of several cheques that will help the Town of Coaldale advance recreation.

Under the newly-signed Recreation Agreement, the county will contribute $470,960 over five years.

Coaldale Mayor Kim Craig was pleased to receive the first allotment of $91,408.

“The Town of Coaldale welcomes the opportunity to grow our relationship with Lethbridge County. With the contribution of the recreation funding, we can continue to offer exceptional amenities to residents of Coaldale and the rest of the County as they both continue to expand.”

While the Town gave pools and skating arenas as two examples of what the money could be used for, council will have to make the exact determinations during their next budget cycle.

Lethbridge County Reeve explains that, since many of their residents use Coaldale’s amenities themselves, this was an important initiative for him.

“By providing the town with stable and predictable funding over the next five years we can help to ensure that these facilities receive any upgrades that might be needed to accommodate growing populations or construct new facilities as needed. We have a very good relationship with Coaldale and the recreation funding we have presented today is just another way we in which we can further strengthen that relationship.”

Under Alberta’s Municipal Government Act, municipalities were made to sign Intermunicipal Collaboration Frameworks with all communities in which they share a common border. Recreation funding is one of the requirements of these agreements.
