LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta is pleading with the public to be careful.

It has been around a month since Stage 1 of the relaunch strategy started and a week since Stage 2 began.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw says, in the last few weeks, the number of active COVID-19 infections grew by 173.

“It means that the virus is still here and it isn’t going anywhere. It also means that, even if we are feeling healthy and symptom-free, we all need to continue operating as though we could spread the virus to others and could catch it from those around us.”

She adds that this was expected as more people have gone back to work and interacting with others in person.

There are some positives, however.

Hospitalization rates have gone down slightly in the last two weeks and active cases in continuing care centres have fallen to just 26.

In Friday’s report, 48 new cases were confirmed, bringing the total to 7,625. Of those, 512 cases are still active while 6,961 people have recovered.

There was only one additional infection in the South Health Zone, which was in Cardston County.

No more Albertans have died from COVID-19 but 39 people remain in hospital as well as six in intensive care units (ICU).

In just the last 24 hours, approximately 9,000 tests for the virus were conducted. To date, there have been 373,724 COVID-19 tests in Alberta.

The regional breakdown is as follows:
